WINTER and DIABETES

Winter is on its way and there are a number of important issues that we feel are worth focusing on.

First we want to start by talking about  fall, which is right now and won’t last forever.

It is important to take advantage of this short fall season and try to be out and about as much as possible for as long as it lasts.

Winter usually makes its entrance quite suddenly so it pays to be prepared with warm clothing; scarves, boots, gloves etc..

The days are short and the nights long so it is vital to try and keep up a routine of exercise.  Often getting out earlier in the day is most helpful.  The later it gets, the colder and windier it gets, which hinders outdoor exercising.

Take advantage of malls but make up your mind to leave the window shopping for after your exercise and try to keep away from the food court or you might defeat the purpose of going there to begin with.

This is a great time to start utilizing all the wonderful fruits and vegetables packed with vitamin c, which, of course, help protect against the common cold and flu.

Some examples are;

Grapefruit, lemon, oranges, tangerines, broccoli, dark green leaves etc..

Check with your health care team about flu and pneumonia vaccine and make sure that you are up to date.

Since winter storms can come along with power outages and can often make getting out difficult, make sure that you are well stocked with medications and supplies, especially those needed on an ongoing basis.

Walking in the cold and snow can be hazardous but can be invigorating as well.  You also burn more fat and calories when walking in the cold, since the body needs to work harder in order to keep warm.  Just be prepared with the best walking gear and good gloves and scarves.
